New Year, New Hires: What To Know for 2023

2022 was full of challenges that had significant implications for employment and hiring. The COVID-19 pandemic continued and several new strains emerged, affecting work attendance and absenteeism. The political unrest in Eastern  Europe had disastrous effects on countries across the world. And, of course, inflation has been on the rise, leading to an increased cost of living and, in some sectors, considerable layoffs.

These are just a few of the factors that had an impact on the way employers recruited new workers this year. As you might expect, several interesting hiring and employment patterns emerged. Some of these are anticipated to continue into and throughout 2023. Let’s explore a few now:

2022 employment and recruitment trends

  • Internal hiring: With some organizations having to tighten their belts, employers looked toward their existing staff to fill vacancies. They did this by upskilling and promoting employees they already had, instead of recruiting new workers.
  • Remote working: Working from home became widespread at the beginning of the pandemic when governments worldwide instituted stay-at-home orders to curb the spread of the coronavirus. This system of working has stayed commonplace, despite lockdown mandates being lifted in most countries.
  • Skills-based hiring: Rather than focusing on a job candidate’s formal qualifications and years of working experience, hiring managers began looking at applicants’ skills and abilities. Many employers started administering skills tests during interviews to ascertain whether the job seeker has the prowess the organization needs.
  • Greater DEI: As social justice becomes increasingly important in all facets of life, businesses have turned their attention to improving their diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies and practices. Employers have paid more heed to the importance of hiring and training members of marginalized groups.

Forecasts for 2023

  • Remote interviewing: In line with the continued ubiquity of remote work, employers are expected to start (or, in some cases, continue) to conduct much of the recruitment process online. Face-to-face interviews are, very likely, going to become an archaic workplace relic.
  • Temporary staff: Rising inflation and fluctuating economic conditions will mean that many organizations won’t be committing themselves to hiring permanent and full-time employees. Instead, they’ll be leveraging the services provided by temporary staffing agencies and firms. Additionally, it’s predicted that many employees will prefer to work in a freelance capacity.
  • Smart management: Automation and artificial intelligence will be utilized to assist hiring managers in the candidate search, selection and onboarding processes. It’s also envisaged that HR personnel will use computerized software to manage an organization’s extant employee pool.
  • Compensation and benefits: Historically considered to be luxuries, benefits such as health insurance and sick leave will become a determining factor in whether people apply to or stay at a job. It’s reckoned that businesses will take care to make their remuneration and benefits packages more competitive, comprehensive and appealing.
